Augustus - Formally known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, was the first Roman Emperor. He gave public aid to an estimated 200,000 citizens.
Herodes Atticus was an early Greek philanthropist who gave a water supply for the City of Troas, a theater for Corinth, public baths for Thermopylae and a stadium for Delphi.Plato created Plato's Academy that was a
voluntary association for the public good. It was established with the intent that the students would carry on Plato's work. Plato gave the Academy to his nephew, the Academy was the first institution of higher education, in addition his gift began the tradition of giving to support education, culture and the arts.
